Dream Ballpoint Pen - JINPU

The spiral beauty of the Japanese traditional techniques

Inspired by the French Renaissance art traits in Japan

The story of JINPU - Dream Ballpoint pen dates back to when Mr. Okagaki was only a child. From his first encounter with the Jinpu-kaku (仁風閣) in Tottori Castle, Japan, he was fascinated by the irrestable shape of the spiral staircases - a distinctive trait of French Renaissance architecture.

The more he explore the world, the more he got attracted to the philosophy behind this shape and how it appears as an important part in the almost every aspect of life, such as the double helix structure of human DNA.

Driven by this immense inspiration, JINPU ballpoint pen has come to this world. Not only is it a reminiscence of Mr. Okagaki's childhood memory of the Jinpu-kaku staircase, but it is also the result of the years of hardworking to combine Japanese traditional techniques on to a modern writing instrument.

Making Process

JINPU Ballpoint pen is created with carefully-selected material and the combination of both traditional and modern techniques.

JINPU - Ebony:
A unique twist of the precious wood material

With its unique "striped grain" and strong quality, Ebony wood is chosen to express the beautiful spiral shape of JINPU ballpoint pen. This time. we have entrusted high-skilled artisans from Gunma, Japan to create this complicated shape. With their experience in making classical music instruments for decades, our artisans have managed to completed a beautiful ballpoint pen in the spiral shape that exceeds our expectation.

Tamamushi

The pen's unique shape is further enhanced by Urushi (Japanese lacquer) with almost two thousand years of history from Aizu, as well as the Art of Tamamushi-nuri, which has been perfected since its inception during the Showa Period. By combining these two different, yet complementary, traditional arts, the artisan was able to achieve a deep, lustrous color that is sure to capture the eye even from across the room.

While many of us may already be aware of the significance of Urushi in Japanese traditional arts, Tamamushi-nuri is a lesser known art even within Japanese culture. The deep reddish-brown or mahogany color of most Tamamushi coated items comes from the fact that it is made from the delicate wings of hundreds, if not thousands, of Tamamushi beetles. After the wings have been ground into a fine powder, the artisan will mix it with transparent Urushi until it has the consistency of Urushi while retaining the unique pigment of a Tamamushi beetle wing.

Tamamushi Green

Like the original red version, the JINPU Tamamushi Green is coated with Tamamushi-nuri, but instead of utilizing transparent Urushi in its mixture, the artisan mixed it with a dark green pigment, resulting in this perfect blend of a forest green color with the complex depth that can only be achieved by Tamamushi.

Ao Tamenuri

The JINPU Ao Tamenuri is an example of restraint and dignity, as the artisan was careful not to overwhelm the user with the color blue. Instead, the blue is so dark that it appears almost black at first glance, but when seen under direct light, it will reveal a dark blue with a greenish hue that seems to transform before your very eyes.

Suki Urushi

The JINPU Suki Urushi has a light coating of Aizu Urushi called Nurippanashi, allowing the contours and its natural wood appearance to be a star in its own right.
