The Origin

For centuries, the Vietnamese people have believed that it is more respectful to animals to maximize and utilize every part. Just like how the Vikings would use whale blubber for soap and candles, the Vietnamese would take something as simple as the horn of a buffalo, and transform it into a work of art. This takes the concept of "zero waste" to an altogether new level - elevating what would normally be thrown away into something desirable.

We first encountered an example of this artwork at a Traditional Arts exhibition in Vietnam, and we were inspired by the artisans and their commitment to using only the most natural of materials for their art. When we discovered that their artform was in danger of being forgotten in the modern day, we knew that it was fate for us to collaborate in creating a new collection of fountain pens crafted from genuine bull horn.

Biodegradable & Ethically Sourced

The material, buffalo horn, is ethically sourced, and unlike items made from synthetic materials such as plastic, the crafting process of a pen with bull horn as the base material does not emit harmful or toxic chemicals. Furthermore, as bull horn is formed from keratin, it is 100% biodegradable, and it will not be damaging to the environment in the unlikely event that the item must be disposed.

Unusually disappointing

"Given my past positive experience with Wancher, I was disappointed with the pen, which looked paler than in the photos and the barrel and cap having a seemingly different hue. Furthermore the Keiryu Kodachi nib I ordered had significantly more feedback than previous ones I ordered."

Beautiful pen

"Once more Wancher does it! Beautiful and uncommon material; very light, well-balanced, pen. I have it with a Keiryu nib which writes beautifully (though, since the nib is sensitive to the pressure used, there is a slight learning curve; very slight if you are familiar with fountain pens and nibs). The ink flow is good and continuous, with some feedback. The only thing stopping me from giving the pen a 5-star rating is that the cap is hard to screw on to the pen, and then it is very slightly misaligned however you screw it on; not really a problem and hardly noticeable, but still an issue if you aim at perfection. Overall, however, a great pen well worth the price!"

Wancher Tsuno: Lovely pen, poor nib

"Overall I love the Wancher Tsuno fountain pen. The horn material is wonderfully tactile and the pen itself has a good heft and feel. I am not in love with the nib. The tines of the nib need some kind of adjustment as I get hard starts with this pen all the time. Otherwise, the pen is fine."

Barry C. (4/5)

Amazing!

"I’m absolutely thrilled with the feel of this unique pen. The natural horn is warm and comfortable in my hand and the colors are beautiful."

Lark J. (5/5)

Unique beauty

"My Tsuno Hikage pen is not only beautiful but also unique. I don't know of any other pen made from bull horn. The material not only looks good, but it feels even better in your hand. I know bull horn from knife handles. It is certainly a great asset for Wancher to introduce this natural material into fountain pens. I love my Tsuno pen."

In a class by itself

"Unique pen with a comfortable shape, light weight and mesmerizing design. Wancher has never failed to delight."

Lisa C. (5/5)

Physically, a beautiful pen. But

"Physically, a beautiful pen. But use it, and it feels good and fits well on the hand and writes so effortlessly. I am very happy and satisfied with my Tsuno pen. Thank you, Wancher"
