The Story
For centuries, the Vietnamese people have believed that it is more respectful to animals to maximize and utilize every part. Just like how the Vikings would use whale blubber for soap and candles, the Vietnamese would take something as simple as the horn of a buffalo, and transform it into a work of art. This takes the concept of "zero waste" to an altogether new level - elevating what would normally be thrown away into something desirable.
We first encountered an example of this artwork at a Traditional Arts exhibition in Vietnam, and we were inspired by the artisans and their commitment to using only the most natural of materials for their art. When we discovered that their artform was in danger of being forgotten in the modern day, we knew that it was fate for us to collaborate in creating a new collection of fountain pens crafted from genuine bull horn.
Variant
1. Classic
The Tsuno Black Fountain Pen is crafted entirely from black buffalo horn, and just like its lighter predecessor, no two pens will be exactly the same as they are all crafted from different buffalo horns. The dark color can appear so black that it absorbs light, which contrasts beautifully with the gleaming silver of the metal grip section and titanium threads.
Beyond its striking appearance, the Tsuno Black Fountain Pen showcases subtle variations in texture, grain, and tone, which under different lighting conditions. This organic individuality gives each pen its own distinct personality, transforming every Tsuno Black into a truly one-of-a-kind writing instrument that reflects the beauty of nature and the skill of the artisans who shape it.
2. Origin
This is crafted for those who appreciate the individuality of natural materials. While it retains the pure black color of the Tsuno Black, each pen preserves more of the buffalo horn's original form, allowing subtle variations in shape and proportion to remain visible.
These characteristics are signatures of the material itself. The Tsuno Origin embraces the natural shape and the beauty that comes with it, creating a unique expression that cannot be replicated.
Biodegradable & Ethically Sourced
The material, buffalo horn, is ethically sourced, and unlike items made from synthetic materials such as plastic, the crafting process of a pen with bull horn as the base material does not emit harmful or toxic chemicals. Furthermore, as bull horn is formed from keratin, it is 100% biodegradable, and it will not be damaging to the environment in the unlikely event that the item must be disposed.
