TESTIMONIALS

Note:

- Bakelite is made from cotton and paper, therefore, the pen color might become slightly darker over time as part of the natural process. This also makes each fountain pen a unique and distinctive artwork, and we hope you will enjoy it. *Please don't mistake this with a defect.

- Self-replacement of nib/feed is not recommended for this product. Please contact us via email at info@wancher.com for further assistance.

Seven Treasures

Seven Treasures is a vintage-inspired premium fountain pen made from high-quality bakelite or ebonite and hand-crafted with Japanese traditional Shippoyaki (七宝焼) art by master Okagaki Yukie.

七宝 /shippo/ means "Seven Treasures" in Japanese. This is a Japanese term used for enamelware. Seven Treasures refer to those treasures which are used as ingredients in making Shippo or Japanese Cloisonne artwork.

焼き /yaki/ means "bake" in Japanese. And 七宝焼 /shippoyaki/ is the Japanese way of making traditional cloisonne art.

Japanese Bakelite

Bakelite is a lightweight yet durable material that was popularly used to make jewelry and writing instruments in the early 20th. However, the emergence of cheaper materials made these items become collectible ones.

We bring back bakelite to the fountain pen community and use it as the base material for our Seven Treasures fountain pen.

Not only being durable the material also gives a warm feeling when holding in hand. The most intriguing aspect of the bakelite used in Seven Treasures fountain pen is the combination of paper and cotton fabrics. Multiple layers of paper and cotton fabrics are rolled up to achieve the required density, then heat and pressure are used to form the final material.

七宝焼 - Shippoyaki

七宝焼 /shippoyaki/ is known as Japanese cloisonne art. Every single Seven Treasures fountain pen is hand-crafted with Shippoyaki art by Japanese Shippoyaki master - 岡垣幸得 (Okagaki Yukie) and artisans from Okagaki Shippoyaki Institute in Tottori, Japan.

七宝 (Seven Treasures) refers to gold, silver, emerald, coral, giant clamshell, glass and pearl. These treasures are combined and applied to the copper surface and then baked to create a piece of Shippoyaki art. This artwork is carved on the cap crown of Seven Treasures fountain pen.

The Shippo designs used for Seven Treasures fountain pen are inspired by master Okagaki's biggest Shippoyaki artwork named はるかなるもの (Harukanarumono).

The good old bakelite

"I just received my "Seven Treasures" Bakelite Black Wancher pen—what an unexpected joy! The pen, in terms of shape, size, and weight, along with the Moonlight Shippo embellishment, is simply gorgeous. But what impressed me most is the feel of the Bakelite. As if, being the first synthetic plastic with over a hundred years of history, it permeates the entire surface, giving it its look and feel. No other material has produced the same sensation. Two minor flaws: I bought the plastic feeder because the ebonite one wasn't available, and the inner cap spring, which prevents the nib from drying out, is too hard. You have to apply too much force to open the pen. The JoWo No. 6 steel nib writes perfectly, but I haven't yet tested the piston/ratchet mechanism."

Spectacular

"I don't like big pieces, on principle. But this is a light and comfortable piece, elegant, safe in the hand and with which you can write long texts. A sensational experience. Aesthetically beautiful. away from any previous experience."

7 Treasures

"I bought this during the original kick starter. There was a delay, but it was well worth it. The shippo on it is beautiful and something I have not seen on another pen, or at least not at this price point. The bottom turning knob has a bit of a gap between the rest of the body of the pen, however it is there on purpose to allow the knob to turn. The pen has a piston ratcheting piston, which is nice. The pen is big, really big. Perhaps not 149 size, but perhaps close. It is definitely the biggest Wancher pen I have. I give it 4 stars not 5 since the pen can't write and needs to be sent off to a nib specialist for tuning. I tried reaching out to get a replacement nib and support didn't help much, which was unusual."
