Maki-e is regarded as one of the highest-grade Urushi techniques which
adds more artistic decorations to Urushi lacquerware by sprinkling gold and/or silver powder. The contrast between the warm moist skin touch of the Urushi lacquer and the cold feeling of gold and silver creates a marvelous harmony of the maki-e.
Premium fountain pens from Rising Sun collection are created with such techniques. They are not only writing instruments but also pieces of art that represent Japanese traditional values, cultures, and craftsmanship.
Sansui means "Mountain and Water" in Japanese. Sansui fountain pen is inspired by the Sansui drawings depicting mountain landscapes in Japan. Creating a Sansui painting with a harmony of objects, dimensions, and spirit is hard. It's intended for the experienced artists who are not only skillful but also understand philosophically the nature elements. Therefore, it is not an easy job to make it on a fountain pen. This is achieved by using the two Japanese traditional techniques: 金箔 (Gold Leaf) and 平蒔絵 (Hira Maki-e).
Material: Ebonite
Ebonite is a great material made from natural rubber with a durable, warm and luxurious feel for handwriting. Ebonite was originally used to make fountain pens in the early 20th century. However, due to its complexity in production, it was later abandoned by most manufacturers in favour of various plastics, which were easier to work with.
Today, as a homage to traditional pen manufacturing, we are honored to restore Ebonite as the material of all of our pens.
