Description

Handcrafted in Wajima by Master Yamanoshita

Since the Raden/Maki-e is applied by hand, the design is different one by one. Therefore, there will be no second fountain pen exactly similar to yours.

Raden

Dream Pen Raden is one of the most longed-for designs in Dream Pen collection. Every single piece of Dream Pen Raden is hand-crafted using Japanese traditional Raden and Maki-e art. While the beauty of Dream Pen Raden can be seen through the sparkling finish created the combination of abalone shells and gold particles. The true value of the fountain pen is set under the many-month making process and the craftsmanship that has been build up through centuries.

Raden (螺鈿 in Japanese), which is also called mother-of-pearl inlay, is one of the techniques in Japanese lacquerware that apply inlays of natural pearl shells to decorate a wooden or ebonite surface. While there are a variety of shells that can be used to make raden, raden on Dream Pen is made from abalone shells collected from the Japanese Sea. Once abalone shells are carefully selected, the qualified ones are flattened into a very thin raden sheet. The pearl sheet is then cut to an exact size to prepare for the applying process. To inlay raden to the surface, it involves underlay, overlay, and polishing steps. However, to finish a Raden Dream Pen, it is not only that. The pre-urushi-lacquering and post-urushi-lacquering are mandatory to achieve a smooth and glossy finish. Every single step of this whole process is crafted with great care and attention to details over a long course of time by highly skilled artisans. Many designs have taken us 1-2 years to finish. It is not just a fountain pen but also a piece of art that carries history, traditional values, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Special Edition - Raden Maki-e Sun Pillar

The Dream Pen Raden Maki-e Sun Pillar reflects the breathtaking scene of a light pillar phenomenon when a vertical shaft of light extending from the sun. Raden and Maki-e are applied parallel in a vertical direction which illustrates the sun's rays and the falling ice crystals that form the Sun Pillars.

After affixing raden the ebonite surface grained gold of varying sizes is sprinkled on and allowed to dry over a long time. The whole process is then finished by Urushi lacquering and polishing steps.

Special Edition - Dream Pen Raden Sun Pillar fountain pen will be signed by Master Yamanoshita with the maki-e technique.

Stunning pen and great service

"I received this pen in mid-2021. Beautiful artistry, lightweight in the hand, sealing cap keeps the nib fresh for weeks if not months. Finding an urushi pen with raden and maki-e at this price point isn't an easy task. This was a pre-order, and when I reached out to customer service for updates, they were very quick to respond. Docking one star because when I ordered this pen in 2021, you could not order both an ebonite feed and a gold nib, which is ridiculous at this price point. I had to obtain an ebonite feed and heat-set it to the gold nib myself. Now, with some custom work on the nib to give it an italic grind, it's one of my go-to pens. Would definitely buy from Wancher again."

Unknown stain

"I found out there is a few stains under the coat when light hit. They were a big stain on the middle of barrel. A first I thought it was just dirty but it turn out it's under the coat. The stain make the pen very dirty. There is one brownish on the tip of the cap also."

Stunning Pen and Wonderful Service

"I purchased the Raden Maki-e Sun Pillar for my fountain pen loving Wife and she absolutely loves it. Not only is it a beautiful piece of craftsmanship but it is comfortable and smooth to write with. I also want to highly commend Handa-san for assisting me so promptly and patiently with my enquiries. Great product and great customer service, I can't be happier."

Elegant pen, perfectly smooth extra fine

"This is a stunningly beautiful pen. I pre-ordered in July and it is worth the wait for such craftsmanship. I typically write with extra fine and the pen is perfectly tuned and buttery smooth even with a steel nib (with ebonite feed). The raden inlay is done in a very artistically way and the gold grains add a nice touch. The dream pen model is a good size to hold and write with. I am looking forward to buying another Wancher pen in the near future."

Create an experience, not just a writing instrument

"I was excited after seeing the photos of the Sun Pillar on the site - the pen combines raden (something I have yet to collect), and maki-e (that which I have true appreciation for) in a spiral splendor that mirrors the universe. It's quite literally an astronomer's wet dream. When the pen arrived I took it in hand, erected it and twisted the body in hand to witness the art. The cosmos swirled as the raden resonated in the light, each crease in the cut shells shimmering; the gold dust was a bit thick, and very concentrated, a mad rush from the body to the cap. There was less of a twist and more of a gush. Perhaps the master wanted to illustrate a more vigorous motion of galactic dust. The cap is spring locked ensuring that the two halves of the pen will match each and every time you reconciled them. The careful attention Wancher played to the mechanics is assuring. The pen is of a good weight. The nib (gold of course) is more firm to the touch than I am used to, but glides across the paper surface nonetheless. The section is decorated with a pulsating splatter of raden, taking elements from the cap inside, and proves to be the highlight of the pen. Taking it in hand, I can't help but notice that the raden on the section matches up with the abrupt edge of the gold pillar. It would have been a holistic experience to gaze upon the strips of pearlescence as I scribbled. The pen was boxed in an intricate manner - illustrated art adorned the lid, with the certificate of authenticity nicely printed on parchment and rolled into a twine ribbon. The pen is also delivered with a fabric single pen pouch, a nice touch for something without a clip. Overall my experience with the Sun Pillar has been a dampened one - the flurry of thick gold made me appreciate one side of the pen more than the other, and the (in my opinion) mismatched section-body view when writing really made much more of a dent in my sense of awe than it should have. Perhaps this is the chance one takes with ordering a handcrafted piece of art off the internet - sight unseen, and also vulnerable to the whims of the artist. I own a few maki-e pens, and was looking forward to a raden-maki-e hybrid to spark more joy, but perhaps I might find it from another."

Raden Sun Pillar

"This pen is gorgeous. It is my first Raden pen, and the raden itself glimmers in the light. The Raden hype is real. I waiting for nearly a year for this pen and it was well worth it. It is the same size as the other Dream pens. I purchased this with an Ume Raden Pen Pillow, Black Ebonite Feed which works well, and a gold nib. This is definitely a grail like pen. These pens use a #6 Jowo Nib system, so if you wanted you could swap out the nibs, which is always nice."

Q&A

I like a clip that is designed into the pen. I have looked and I don’t see any . Please let me know
This pen has no clip. I think the pen is perfect without clip; it would ruin the aesthetics. This is my most precious pen and I would not clip it to a shirt pocket. I would carry it in a pen pouch (a nice one provided). But you do have to be careful so that the pen does not roll off the table.
