Description

The Barong Tagalog is the national formalwear of the Philippines, a Southeast Asian country with a rich history and beautiful islands. It is recognizable for its semi-transparent, sepia-toned coloring and handcrafted embroidery that resemble a tapestry of iconic Filipino designs and cultural icons. 

Origins

The Barong originated several centuries ago from the Baro, which was a thin garment crafted from pineapple silk or cocoon silk, that Filipinos would wear on special occasions. However, when Magellan and the Spaniards colonized the Philippines, Filipinos were forced to wear the Barong because of its transparency, and they were not allowed to tuck it into their waistband, so that weapons would be visible from afar.

Instead of allowing this to taint the Barong, the Filipinos would later reclaim it, using it as a symbol of their resilience and eventual triumph. In the 21st Century, the Barong remains an essential part in the modern Filipino's wardrobe, becoming so important that the President will wear a Barong for any major diplomatic event. 

Made in Manila

To celebrate our second consecutive appearance at the Manila Pen Show, we decided to collaborate with the Master Craftsmen of Barong in Lumban, Philippines, to create four Pen Barongs. Each pen barong features handcrafted embroidery which can be found on many actual Barongs with genuine pineapple silk material for the outer-layer, and a double lining of silk inside to protect your pen. 

Although the majority of our pens and accessories are crafted in Japan with Japanese traditional artistic techniques, our mission has always been to shine a light on artwork from different cultures as part of our Wancher Voyage collection. Thus, it was incredibly important for us to be able to debut the Pen Barong in the Philippines at the Manila Pen Show.

With only thirty pieces available at the time, it was incredibly humbling to have all thirty pieces soldout by the end of the show. After the generous reception our Pen Barongs received in the Philippines, it is our privilege to introduce four different types of the Pen Barong with the rest of the world.
