Bringing the past into the Modern Age, the Meiji Titanium Ballpoint Pen.
Origin
For the many people with an in-depth knowledge of Japanese history, the inspiration for this ballpoint pen is obvious not only from the name alone, but from its construction alone. The Meiji Period of Japan was essentially the dawn of modernity, and it represented Japanese society's commitment into leaving behind the days of the shogunate and samurai, and moving toward a future filled with technological advancements.
However, the Emperor of Japan still remained as a figure of great respect, and it is for this reason that we crafted a titanium ballpoint pen that has been bound to a body of carved ebony wood. This represents the dual nature of Japan since the Meiji Period, wherein historic buildings such as Horyuji Temple and the eye catching Tokyo Tower are equally beheld as beautiful, architectural structures.
The Design
As with our inspiration, we designed this pen to represent the delicate balance between a respect for nature and man-made creations. Thus, the grip section and the straight clip are crafted from titanium, and they have the sleek, brutalist cuts that only a machine and metal can achieve. However, the body of the pen is crafted from ebony wood, and its shape is not a traditional cylindrical shape; instead, it is triangular with smooth edges to allow for a comfortable and secure grip in the crook of your hand as you write.
The reason we selected titanium is twofold - the first being that it is a soft and luxurious metal, and the second being that it is generally acceptable even for people with allergies to most types of metal. Additionally, titanium is much lighter than stainless steel, which means that writing with the Meiji Titanium will be a smooth and easy process, allowing you to focus entirely on the art of writing.
The choice of ebony wood was similarly purposeful, and it was selected for the lustrous color that can be achieved after the careful polishing of the wood. Unlike the titanium material, it is not known for being a particularly light type of wood, which is why it was chosen to act as a point of contrast from the titanium grip and clip. You are meant to feel the heft of the wood as you write, which makes you appreciate the pen not only as a writing instrument, but as an extension of your thoughts and ideals.
From the logo on the top of the pen to the way the ballpoint tip is revealed with a simple twist of the titanium grip, the Meiji Ballpoint Pen was made with a significant attention to detail, and each facet was intentionally chosen to be the best possible pen for its user's collection.
