Important Note: Traces of the use of lacquered cloth over a many-month making process can be seen on the surface of the pen. It becomes a part of the art and is considered an artistic charm of this technique.
*Please do not mistake this part of the craftsmanship with defects.*

The Sekai fountain pen is born from the aspiration to be connected and peaceful like the World Tree in many mythologies. This collection embraces the idea of connecting the world with the arts.
The base materials of the Sekai fountain pen have been carefully selected from natural precious woods from all over the world such as Ebony and Sandalwood. It is then crafted with traditional arts such as Urushi, Maki-e or decorated with high-quality Japanese Sterling Silver clip.
Fuzhou Urushi collection marks another milestone in our journey of discovering hidden arts around the world. This time, we are bringing to you the very first Urushi fountain pens handmade with the Dry Lacquer technique from Fuzhou, a city in southeastern China.
Known as one of the three most famous handicrafts in the country, along with porcelain from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, and cloisonne from Beijing, dry lacquer from Fuzhou is a treasure of Chinese traditional arts. The technique is said to be invented by artist Shin Shoan (沈紹安) during the Qianlong era (1736-1795). This is then passed down to several generations and became the pinnacle of Chinese Urushi lacquer these days.
Sekai Fuzhou Urushi fountain pen is handcrafted with dry lacquer technique by skillful artisans from Fuzhou and it owns all the characteristics that dry lacquer is well-known for: durable, light in weight, and rich in color. Different from the glossy finish usually seen with other Urushi techniques, dry lacquer creates a unique finish that has a rich and strong texture resembling a semi-matt surface. This is the result of a very distinctive making process of dry lacquer.
Originally, dry lacquer is a technique of using lacquered hemp cloth to create sculptures. The making process is adjusted when applying on a fountain pen but there are main steps that can't be missed.
- After the sap is collected from the tree, it is refined and well-prepared for the lacquering process.
- A layer of hemp cloth is soaked into a fine base coating lacquer and then applied over the surface of the pen.
- After the first coat layer is dry, many layers of middle and top lacquers are applied also using lacquered hemp cloth. Coat after coat of lacquer is crafted and polished until the surface is perfectly smooth and rich.
- Each coat must dry completely and evenly polished before the next coat. This is why the whole process is intensively laborious and requires not only a lot of time but also a great set of skills and attention.
The dry lacquer leaves the pen with a marvelous decoration and also works as a strong protective layer that helps your fountain pen last for a lifetime. When time passes by, the Urushi finish will become brighter and glossier. You will be enjoying the beautiful aging process of this artwork for many more years to come.
As the first special edition of the Urushi fountain pens ever made with Dry Lacquer from Fuzhou, only for this time, each piece will come with a serial number handwritten by the craftsman who made the pen.

"Good ink flow, but but there are finishing problems."

"My over all purchase and order experience with Wancher was lovely. Before I made this purchase, I asked several questions and every time, there was a helpful and personal reply. Shipping and delivery was efficient. The packaging is nicely done and the pen included pen kimono has a very soft lining. Overall the Fuzhou Urushi Aka Tamenuri is sooo nice. For my hands, it's weight and size are comfortable. It's feel in the hand is warm and smooth. The finish is very good for an urushi product at this price point. On this pen, I would have wished for a little better attention to the finishing detail at the transition point (step down) between the barrel and the threads--the black finish does not quite cover the wood. It's minor, but could be avoided quite easily, I imagine. At the same time, it reminds me that this pen was hand finished and created by a human being dedicated to this art form. I ordered this pen with a 1.1 gold-plated steel nib and a red ebonite feed. I like this aesthetic and function very much. The nib performs beautifully (smooth and relatively wet). Overall, this is a very attractive pen that writes very well, and is wonderful to admire, cherish, and hold."

"This is my first Wancher pen and probably not my last. I love the variety of designs available. I, however, insist on my pens having a clip because all of my pens get used for work. So to be functional, they absolutely must have a clip. It would be nice to see Wancher make more designs with ciips. Ok, so about the pen above....it is really, really pretty. The red urushi is gorgeous and has lighter and darker patches giving it an interesting amount of varation in depth and color. The weight is nice and light and the feel of urushi is great. Urushi is easy to grip and doesn't slip around in your hand like metal does. I have pens with metal sections and I hate them for that reason. THE CLIP! The clip on this pen is very interesting. It wraps almost all the way around the cap (not a full circle) and is attached to the cap with two tiny screws. The pictures above do not do it justice, my screws look very clean and tidy and in the pictures above, they don't. The nib I chose is the solid gold Wancher nib in medium and it is excellent but VERY, VERY wet. I know a lot of people love wet nibs but for me, this one was a little too wet. I used a techique I learned online that i have used in the past and with VERY SLIGHT pressure, pressed the pen upside down on the back side of the nib and now the pen writes perfect for my taste. Much less wet but still plenty juicy. I am really enamored with this pen and I would love to buy more Wancher pens. So many gorgeous designs but without clips! Sigh...... I bought a couple more nibs and a red ebonite feed to try on this pen as well and I am looking forward to seeing how it writes with those as well."

"i love the Urushi. that is why i bought it. There are some things that are annoying (given the price). i) when you screw the lid on to the body there is a click. Something is catching in the thread of the pen lid with the body. ii) the pen body does not sit perfectly aligned (straight) in the lid. So it looks wonky when it rolls on the desk. These things re disappointing in a £300 pen i must say. I also did not realise i would have to pay VAT and import duties when it came into the UK. I liked that you had no shipping charges . That is what made me decide to buy the pen. that of course, is not your responsibility but you should put a notice in a more prominent place in the web page to make people aware."

"This pen is the perfect size to fit into my briefcase. Not too big or wide and with the Dry Lacquer technique I know I won't damage it sliding it in and out. I very subtle red is amazing as well, you have to really get the right light to see it."

"It's, by all means, the best pen I have had so far. It writes smoothly, feels perfectly balanced in your hand and looks simply magnificent. Also, if you are not sure about the gold nib, I sincerely recommend you choosing one. Not only does it look great, but the writing experience - the nib's hardness especially - is marvellous."

"This is a beautiful and fun-writing pen. Clearly, expert workmanship went into designing and crafting it. It feels great in the hand (very balanced with a nice smooth glossy feel). It's a very good-sized pen (on the larger side, but not too light or heavy - it feels just right). Between the beautiful color, style, shape, and handcrafted aesthetics, it's sure to stand out in your collection and get people's attention. I took a gamble getting the extra-fine model, but I really enjoy how it writes after breaking it in over a couple days. Naturally, an EF nib is going to be a bit scratchy, but with some minor tuning it now has great tactile feedback without feeling too scratchy. Ink flow is also great, not too dry and not too wet (wet enough for most people). Since Wancher uses German Bock #6 nibs, the EF line width is closer to a Japanese medium. For instance, I recently purchased a Sailor 1911S EF and it produces a noticeably finer line. My only minor concern would be that when I let the capped pen sit nib down (on table or in pocket), there is some leaking. Of course that is easily fixed by keeping the pen flat or nib up. Lastly, Wancher's customer service has been extraordinarily helpful and friendly (Ann & Nawreen). Despite shipping delays due to COVID, they were very responsive and respectful in our correspondences. I wish Wancher and team the best! Thanks for the awesome pen!"

"The pen is fantastic, good balance and size, opens in one and a half turns, generous flow, glides like a dream. I can't recommend it enough. There were some complications due to COVID-19 stuff, but the staff kept clear and constant communications until the issue was resolved. Afterwards I got my pen wicked fast."

"Imagine the beauty of a hand crafter fountain pen, using historical techniques of lacquer and traditional design. Once you hold this pen in your hand, you’ll realise, like I did, that your imagination wasn’t enough! This is a spectacularly beautiful pen, with a lot of depth and my first Wancher pen too; will not be my last. I got mine with a broad steel nib and ebonite feed. Inked up with Pilot Iroshizuku yama-guri. As I started to write, my words on the page soon read “This is a gorgeous writer! My goodness! Wow!!”. It’s a beautifully smooth writer, with a tiny hint of gentle feedback (imagine a 3B pencil, but much smoother). It completely blew my mind. If you love fountain pens, you will love this one."
