A distinctive traditional Urushi technique that embraces the Japanese Wabi-sabi aesthetics.
The fountain pen is handcrafted in Tsugaru, Aomori prefecture, using Tsugaru's most famous Urushi technique - 唐塗り /kara-nuri/, which illustrates distinctive speckled patterns created by four to six different Urushi color lacquers.
Kara-nuri is a process of repeating steps including Urushi coating, grinding, and polishing. After the first base color is painted, other Urushi colors will be coated to cover the base color. This surface is left to dry and then ground until the base color is revealed. The process is finished with a polishing step giving a shining touch to the final artwork.
While Kara-nuri is Tsugaru's main Urushi technique which results in the finish of Shiro-age or Midori-age, Raden Kara-nuri is also a distinctive art of Tsugaru where Raden and Kara-nuri is crafted together on the object.
And Dream Pen Kara-nuri is made in two designs: Kara-nuri and Raden Kara-nuri to honor these two techniques.
*Regarding the name Shiro-age and Midori-age of the designs: "Shiro" means "white", "Midori" means "green", and "age" means "raised", this refers to the base color that is finally revealed after the grinding process is done.
