Bamboo Weave - Traditional Art of Japan
From time immemorial, bamboo has played a important role in Japanese culture. It is symbol of prosperity and protection. Ancient Japanese wisdom often tell tales of people taking refuge in bamboo groove during terrifying earthquakes.
Famous for its strength, bamboo has been used in construction and handicrafts. Bamboo weaving (竹編み) is one of the representative art of ancient Japan. However, due to modern manufacturing techniques, this art has gradually faded into obscurity.
Continuing our mission to rediscover lost arts throughout Japan, we are proud to present this pen case collection made by a craftsman from Beppu city, Oita prefecture in the southern island of Kyushu. Mr. Iwao Ichiro has produced beautiful works from bamboo and chosen by the government of Oita prefecture to be featured at the 87th Tokyo International Gift Show.
