About Dream Pen Aizu Urushi
As you might have known from our Sekai collection, Aizu Urushi is one of the oldest and most famous lacquerware in Japan. Originated from Aizu - a region of heavy snowfalls, Aizu Urushi has a history of over 9000 years.
About Aka Tamenuri
Aka Tamenuri is one of the most treasured Urushi techniques in the entire history of the art form, and one can find multiple reasons of why such as its inherent beauty, the genuine warmth elicited by simply looking at it, but the most important reason is in how no single Aka Tamenuri pen can ever be the same, and the Aizu Urushi Aka Tamenuri is no exception.
The process begins with an initial coating of red Urushi. From there, the artisan may choose to add layers of black Urushi, Suki Urushi (transparent lacquer), or even another shade of red. Each decision creates subtle variations, ensuring that every pen carries its own character.
