Description

Important Notice: The Kaisaishiki art requires a thinner finishing lacquer than usual so that you can feel the Raden inlays through a slight touch. Moreover, the lacquers are applied with a special spatula-like tool - the shikake-bera, which traces can be seen on the pen's surface. These two points combined result in a unique charm of the Tsugaru lacquer and the artistic trait of the hand-crafted fountain pen art. *Please do not mistake this with defect.

Dream Pen - Raden Kara-nuri

Raden Kara-nuri or Kaisaishiki is one of Tsugaru Urushi styles which refers to lacquerware made in Tsugaru - a city located in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Being known as one of the most skill-intensive Urushi techniques, Tsugaru-nuri is sophisticated yet stunningly beautiful with its unusual finish.

Kaisaishiki-nuri is a combination of Raden and Kara-nuri techniques. While Kara-nuri creates the pattern of Shiro-age or Midori-age, Raden technique involves inlaying pearl shells onto the surface of the pen. Therefore, this style results in a truly unique finish where the sophisticated beauty of Raden and Kara-nuri art is elegantly presented.

*Regarding the name Midori-age of the design: "Midori" means "green" and "age" means "raised", this refers to the base color that is finally revealed after the grinding process is done.
